Winning back the customer who abandoned the cart
Why carts are abandoned, how to build the reminder flow, and when to bring a discount in.
A visitor who added something to the cart and left without buying has already shown interest. That is why winning them back is cheaper than finding a new customer.
Reduce the cause first
Reducing the reasons for abandonment is more effective than sending reminders. The three most common: the shipping fee only appearing at the last step, forced registration, and a long checkout. Showing the shipping fee on the product page, allowing guest checkout and cutting the number of steps all have a direct effect.
A three-stage reminder
- Hour 1: A plain reminder. No discount — just the items in the cart and a link to continue.
- Hour 24: Add reassurance about the product — return terms, delivery time, a customer review.
- Hour 72: A small incentive if needed. Free shipping or a time-limited discount.
Do not give the discount straight away
If you offer a discount in the first email, customers learn to abandon the cart on purpose. Leaving the incentive to last protects the margin.
Measure it
Once the flow is running, watch the open and conversion rates. If the third step contributes little, change the copy of the first two steps before you change the discount amount.
